The baths
Open-air bath
Seven different open-air baths spread over roughly 400 tsubo (about 1,300 sqm), including a mud bath and a steam bath, plus a foot bath. Simple spring and simple sulphur spring. Swimwear must be worn in all of these.
Private (kashikiri) bath
Three private family baths, 60 minutes for 1,500-2,500 yen and the only baths here where swimwear is not required. One sits about 300 m along a path through a bamboo grove and feels genuinely remote - its stone tub dates from 1871 and has been renovated while keeping the original form. The other two are next to the office.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

- ¥900Open-air baths 900 yen adult / 500 yen child - swimwear is compulsory for these. The three private family baths are 1,500-2,500 yen for 60 minutes and are the option to pick if you would rather not wear a swimsuit. Closing days are irregular.

- In the Myoban district at Yuyama 4-kumi, up in the hills above Beppu - realistically a car trip. Has parking. Because the bamboo-grove bath has no lighting, the site closes at sundown, so arrive with time to spare. Tel 090-4988-4179.
