Tanayu is five terraced pools stepping down the Kankaiji hillside with the whole of Beppu Bay open in front of you - the widest view from any bath in the city. It is a 768-capacity resort bath rather than a quiet soak and the water is not the selling point, but a free shuttle runs up from Beppu Station.

Scored from official photos, maps and transport information — not from a visit.

The baths

Open-air bath

Tanayu, a terraced open-air bath of five stepped pools looking over Beppu Bay, with a loyly sauna, cold bath and outdoor cool-down space. Capacity 768.

Open to day visitors

Open-air bath

Sorayu, a top-floor viewing open-air bath about 250 m above sea level. Restricted to guests of the Sora wing and the higher Hoshi wing room types.

Overnight guests only

Private (kashikiri) bath

Private baths marketed as 'Oita Goyu'. Availability for day visitors is not stated on the official site.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
