A 450-yen bathhouse at the head of a valley, on the site of a cure-bath laid out in 1750 by Asano Yoshinaga, lord of the Hiroshima domain. There is nothing to look at - indoor tubs only - and the draw is the 4-metre waterfall of untreated 23.5C source water you stand under between soaks in the 41C indoor bath. Cheap, plain and very quiet; the closest thing in Hiroshima to an old toji bathhouse still in use.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

The baths

Indoor bath

Separate men's and women's indoor baths heated to 41C, plus the house speciality: a utase-yu waterfall bath that drops 4 m off the bedrock at the source temperature of 23.5C. The intended way to use it is to warm up indoors and then stand under the cold fall, alternating. There is no open-air bath and no private bath.

Getting there
At the far end of the Yunoyama Onsen valley in Saeki Ward, a separate hamlet from Yuki Onsen and further into the mountains. Parking for 5 cars of its own plus about 40 nearby. Public transport is thin here - the bus network serves Yuki Lodge rather than this bathhouse, so plan on a car or a taxi from there.
