The closest hot spring to Miyajima, and it sells that: the baths and the second-floor terrace garden look straight across the Ono Strait to the island. The water is a weak radioactive low-temperature spring spread across nine tubs including jets and bubbles, so it reads as a well-kept day-spa rather than a spring with a strong character. Refurbished, with a restaurant of its own, so you can make an afternoon of it. Note the absolute tattoo ban before planning around it.

The house counts nine baths in all: a rock bath, a bath that changes daily, a plain hot spring tub, a cypress tub, a jet bath, a bubble bath, a sauna, a cold plunge and a free foot bath at the entrance. Windows look out over the Ono Strait towards Miyajima.

The facility's own account states it has an open-air bath and a sauna, but the bath list on its website does not name which of the nine tubs is outdoors - treat the open-air bath as present but unconfirmed in layout.

Practical details

Day visits: Yes — you can bathe without staying overnight.
10:00-22:00 (last entry 21:30); closed the 3rd Tuesday of each month (the following day if that Tuesday is a public holiday)
Day visit price: ¥800
800 yen for adults on weekdays, 400 yen for elementary school children, 150 yen for toddlers, infants free. Members pay 750 yen. Shampoo and body soap are in the bathroom; towels are not included (bath towel rental 120 yen, face towel sold at 180 yen). The operator has announced a partial price revision from 1 December, so check the official site before travelling.
Staying overnight: No
Getting there: On the coast at Miyahama Onsen, directly opposite Miyajima. About 5 minutes by car from JR Ono-ura Station, or 10 minutes from JR Miyajimaguchi Station (the Miyajima ferry pier), from Ono IC and from JR Kuba Station. The Ono Heart Bus community bus stops at 'Benimansaku no Yu' roughly once an hour.
