A 620-yen day bathhouse on the Dogoyama highlands, opened in 2005 next to a hiking lodge, and the operator states plainly that the water runs free-flowing from the source - unusual at this price. It is all indoors, with a bubble bath, a jet bath and a sauna, so there is no view from the tub; what you get instead is genuine highland quiet, with nothing around it but mountain. Wednesdays cost 360 yen. Only car directions are published.

A bubble bath, a jet bath, a sauna and a cold plunge, all indoors, fed with undiluted free-flowing source water. There is a rest room and a dining room in the building. No open-air bath and no private bath are listed.

10:30-21:00 (March-November), 11:30-21:00 (December-February). Closed every Tuesday, except public holidays, Obon and New Year.

620 yen for adults and 310 yen for children; on Wednesdays it drops to 360 and 150 yen. The restaurant next door opens 11:30-14:30 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays only.

Getting there
On the Dogoyama highlands in Saijo-cho, Shobara, in the far north-east of the prefecture near the Shimane border. The operator publishes car directions only: about 50 minutes from Shobara IC or 40 minutes from Tojo IC on the Chugoku Expressway. Treat this as a car trip unless you have confirmed a connection yourself.
