A municipal lodge in a river valley an hour from central Hiroshima, and the water is the real thing: the lodge states it uses the source undiluted, heating it only to adjust temperature from 28.3C. Both open-air baths face the Minochi River, so you are looking at the water and the trees rather than a fence. Kagura, Hiroshima's sacred dance-drama, is performed here twice a month. There is a barrier-free family bath by reservation, worth asking about if a shared bath is not an option for you.

The baths

Open-air bath

Two open-air baths facing the Minochi River, one in the cypress bathhouse and one in the marble bathhouse. The two bathhouses swap between men and women on even and odd days, so which one you get depends on the date.

One indoor bath in each of the two bathhouses, plus a high-temperature dry sauna on the cypress side and a mist sauna on the marble side.

Private (kashikiri) bath

A barrier-free family bath is available by reservation - ask the lodge directly, as no price is published. This is the only bath here you can use without entering a shared bath.

750 yen for one entry, or 1,000 yen for all-day use, for ages 12 and over; 300 / 500 yen for ages 4-11. Bathing tax included. Towels 200 yen each. A day room can be added from 3,300 yen (11:00-14:00, three hours, room only, reservation required). Holders of an atomic-bomb survivor's certificate pay 550 yen.

Getting there
In the Yuki Onsen hamlet in the mountains of Saeki Ward, about an hour and a quarter from central Hiroshima. From JR Itsukaichi Station south exit, a Hiroden bus runs to the 'Yuki Lodge mae' stop (about 76 minutes; the last bus back to Itsukaichi leaves 19:30 on weekdays, 18:40 at weekends and on holidays, about 1,000 yen). A free shuttle from JR Hiroshima Station north exit runs once a day each way on weekdays, but for staying guests only and by reservation. About 30 minutes by car from Togouchi IC.
