A 200-yen locals' bath in the old post town of Sekigane, whose clear radium water was nicknamed 'shirogane no yu' (the platinum bath). One small hot tub, no amenities, and the regulars wash with water from the tub. A genuine slice of village life rather than a sightseeing spa; the mountains of Daisen and Hiruzen are nearby but you need a car to reach them.

The baths

Indoor bath

A 120-year-old village bath with a single small tub (about three people) of hot, free-flowing radium spring water. Locals wash around the tub using the spring water - keep soap out of the bath.

Nihon Kotsu buses on the Sekigane line from JR Kurayoshi Station take about 35 minutes to the Sekigane Onsen stop, roughly once an hour (about 17 a day).
