How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Open-air bath
'Umi no Yu' view bath and open-air bath 27 m above the ground, looking down on the Sea of Japan with Mount Daisen in the distance.
Indoor bath
Indoor large bath. Kaike Onsen water: sodium-calcium chloride spring, piped to every large-bath tub. Guest hours 15:00-23:00 and 6:00-9:00.
Private (kashikiri) bath
Four private baths, 'Shiosai no Koroten': barrel (open-air and indoor), rock (open-air and indoor), garden (open-air) and granite (indoor). 45 minutes each; last starts 22:00 in the evening and 8:00 in the morning. Overnight guests only.
In-room bath
Rooms with an open-air bath. Only the twin modern Japanese room and the Cabana room take spring water; the sea-view room, the Hollywood twin with a balcony bath and special rooms 301/401 use heated tap water.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
