A small hillside inn that lets day visitors take its open-air baths privately for 2,500 yen a room - one looking onto autumn foliage, the other facing Mt Tsurumi, both built from large rocks among the trees. The day-use hours move with how full the inn is, so ring before driving up.

The baths

Private (kashikiri) bath

The open-air baths - 'Kurenai no Yu', which looks onto autumn foliage, and 'Tsurumi no Yu', which faces Mt Tsurumi - are built from large rocks and stone among the trees, and day visitors take them privately. Simple spring and sulphur spring, colourless and mild.

Open to day visitors

Private (kashikiri) bath

Indoor bath with a jacuzzi, also taken privately and surprisingly large for a private booking.

Open to day visitors

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
