A spotlessly kept 100-yen bath down a back lane near Beppu Station, with the neighbourhood community hall on the floor above in the standard local arrangement. It takes cards, which is rare at this price, and the attendant and the regulars are used to visitors turning up.

Indoor bath

Small, spotlessly kept simple-spring bath with a community hall on the first floor above - the standard Beppu neighbourhood layout. Rebuilt by local residents after a fire. Very much a local living room; the attendant and regulars are used to visitors and happy to chat.

100 yen flat, no closing day. Towels are sold for 100 yen and soap for 100 yen at the desk. Cashless and card payment are accepted, which is rare for a bath this cheap.

Getting there: At 7-5 Hikari-machi, tucked down a back lane in a residential block near JR Beppu Station - easy to walk straight past. No parking.
