A municipal bath house in a riverside park, and the rare Japanese hot spring you can reach on a Shinkansen ticket - Chikugo-Funagoya Station is fifteen minutes away on foot. The water is a magnesium-sodium-calcium bicarbonate spring picked for the Kyushu 88 Onsen list, and in summer one outdoor tub is left at its natural 30C, which is the best thing here on a hot day. The tatami eating area doubles as the rest space, so it is busy at lunchtime. The produce hall, the park, the Hawks' farm stadium and a free foot bath are all within a few minutes.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

The baths

Indoor bath

Two indoor bathrooms in contrasting styles, one traditional and one closer to a modern spa. Men's and women's sides swap weekly.

Open to day visitors

Open-air bath

A rough-hewn rock open-air bath with a reclining tub, inside the Chikugo Regional Park. In summer one tub is filled with unheated source water at about 30C.

A 15-minute walk from Chikugo-Funagoya Station, which is on the Kyushu Shinkansen as well as the Kagoshima Main Line, so it is one of the easiest hot springs in the prefecture to reach without a car. The Chikugo-Funagoya and Chikugo Koiki Koen bus stops are a minute away. About 8 minutes by car from the Yame IC.
