Can you bathe here with a tattoo?
This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.
Visiting for the day
Guests with tattoos are refused entry to the facility, so private baths are not an option either.

How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Open-air bath
The open-air section is the point of the place: a large rock bath with a bubble tub, a bath hollowed from a single tree trunk, a waterfall-view bath with a reclining tub, a cypress bath (women) and a binchotan-charcoal bath surrounded by bamboo (men), pottery tubs on both sides and steam baths with an outdoor cooling area.
Indoor bath
Indoor bathrooms alongside the open-air ones.
Private (kashikiri) bath
Four private family baths - charcoal, cypress, lava stone and a bath built from boulders dug up when the place was constructed. 50 minutes, minimum two people, maximum five. Bookable online or by phone from the 20th of the previous month; weekend slots close the day before. NOTE: the facility's tattoo rule applies here too, so these are not a way around it.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
