The grand old inn of Futsukaichi, founded in 1865, with a very large rock bath on each side. The water is a 48C alkaline simple spring at 100 litres a minute, though the inn is candid that part of it is filtered and reheated. There is no cheap walk-in bath here - day use means booking a kaiseki meal - and the family baths are closed at the time of writing, which matters if you were counting on a private tub.

Indoor bath

Tsugita-no-yu, a 100-tsubo rock-built bath on each side, styled after a river and waterfall basin. The inn describes it as source-fed but adds that part of the water is recirculated, filtered and reheated.

The inn does not publish a bath-only walk-in rate. Day use is sold as a kaiseki meal plan that includes the bath, from 8,690 yen per person (13,200 and 18,700 yen courses are also offered); plan B, which uses a guest room rather than a dining room, adds a 6,600 yen room charge for up to two people. Booking is by phone.

About a 10-minute walk from Futsukaichi Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line, on the main Prefectural Route 31; roughly 3 minutes from the Chikushino IC by car. Dazaifu Tenmangu is a short train ride away.
