A wooden three-storey bathhouse founded in 1860, and the reason to come is the water rather than the room: undiluted, unheated, uncirculated spring water piped seven metres from the well straight into the tub, with a sulphur smell and a lot of radon. There is nothing to look at - indoor tubs only, no open-air bath - but the second-floor tatami hall is free from 10:00 to 21:00, so you can stay a while for 350 yen. Ten minutes on foot from the station.

The baths

Indoor bath

One indoor bath per gender, fed straight from a 260 m well on the property. The water travels about 7 m to the tub without ever touching air, and the bathhouse states it does no dilution, no reheating and no recirculation. Faintly sulphurous and unusually high in radon for a hot spring. There is no open-air bath and no private bath.

350 yen on weekdays, 450 yen on weekends and public holidays. Children 6-11: 200 yen; ages 4-5: 100 yen. Shampoo, body soap and a hairdryer are provided; a towel set rents for 280 yen. A private tatami room can be booked for 600 yen per hour (a rest room, not a bath).

About a 10-minute walk from Futsukaichi Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line, in the small Futsukaichi Onsen quarter of Chikushino City. Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station (for Dazaifu Tenmangu, two stops away) is a similar walk. About 5 minutes by car from the Chikushino IC.
