An 1886 inn on the Yabe River whose view bath looks straight into a camphor grove over 350 years old - genuinely worth the window seat. For a day visit the awkward part is the pricing: the view bath is sold only as a ten-visit book, so a single traveller is really buying the private half-open-air bath, which at 2,000 yen for two with its own barrel sauna and a carbonated cold plunge is the better deal anyway. Twenty minutes on foot from a Shinkansen station, with the park and the Hawks' stadium next door.

Nodoka-yu (men) and Hanagoromo-yu (women), view baths looking over a camphor grove more than 350 years old and the Yabe River. Overnight guests may use them 15:00-9:30.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Kusu, a private half-open-air bath facing the camphor grove, with its own barrel sauna where you can pour water on the stones and a cold plunge of the carbonated Funagoya mineral water. From 2,000 yen for two people for 50 minutes; day visitors 14:00-20:00, overnight guests 15:00-22:50.

The hotel does not sell a single walk-in ticket for the view bath: it is 7,000 yen for a book of ten visits, with a face towel lent free. The private half-open-air bath, Kusu, is the practical day-use option at 2,000 yen upwards for two people for 50 minutes. Reception can be suspended over New Year and Golden Week.

About a 20-minute walk from Chikugo-Funagoya Station on the Kyushu Shinkansen and Kagoshima Main Line, or 5 minutes from the Chikugo-Funagoya bus stop. Next to the Chikugo Regional Park, the Kyushu Geibunkan and the SoftBank Hawks' farm stadium; the Koibotaru bath house is 3 minutes away on foot.
