A big day-use complex outside Uozu on genuinely unusual water - sulphur-bearing sodium-calcium chloride, hydrogen sulphide type, arriving at 75C in quantity. The indoor rock bath is one of the largest in Japan and there is a garden open-air bath, a sauna and food, so it holds a whole afternoon. It sits in open country rather than anywhere scenic and needs a taxi or a car. For tattooed travellers this is the practical pick in eastern Toyama: communal baths are closed to you, but the four private rooms are on the same source water.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Four private bathrooms, charged separately: 1,800 yen for 60 minutes, 2,100 yen for 90, 2,400 yen for 120. The operator specifically points guests with tattoos to these, which makes this one of the few sulphur baths in Toyama a tattooed traveller can actually use.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

Priced by length of stay: 760 yen for one hour, 1,100 yen for three hours, 1,300 yen for the day. Going over the three-hour limit adds 200 yen. Overnight guests at the attached hotel get in free.

Getting there: In the fields outside Uozu, on the Toyama coast. About 10 minutes by car from Kurobe-Unazuki-Onsen Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, from Uozu Station, or from the Uozu interchange - there is no walkable station, so plan on a taxi or a car. Open until 23:30, which makes it a workable late stop after a day in the Kurobe Gorge.
