An expressway service area is an unlikely place for good water, but the analysis is real: a sodium chloride strong-salt spring from 1,200 m down, 14.86 g/kg of dissolved solids, with one open-air tub fed straight from the source. The rest of the building is a full Japanese leisure bathhouse - carbonated baths, a tower sauna, a 16C plunge, a manga library, reclining chairs, a work space and a 100 yen foot bath outside - and the Ferris wheel and market of Kariya Highway Oasis are the other side of the door. Closed on the 15th. Tattoos, stickers included, are refused at reception.

Open-air bath

Separate men's and women's open-air gardens - a Japanese rock garden on one side, a tropical resort layout on the other - each with a tub fed straight from the source without recirculation, plus jar baths and a shallow lying-down bath.

Indoor hall with two high-concentration carbonated baths (one warm, one at body temperature), an electric-massage bath, jet baths, a three-tier tower sauna and a 16C cold plunge.

Practical details

Day visits: Yes — you can bathe without staying overnight.
Weekdays 09:00-23:00, weekends and public holidays 07:00-23:00 (last entry 22:15). Closed on the 15th of each month, or the next weekday if the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday.
Day visit price: ¥950
950 yen for an adult on weekdays and 980 yen at weekends and on public holidays (900/930 yen with the 200 yen membership card). Children 470/500 yen, free under 3. A morning bath on weekend and holiday mornings (07:00-10:00) is 750 yen. The Korean-style stone-sauna floor costs 650 yen extra and cannot be used on its own; a rental towel set is 300 yen. No re-entry once you leave.
Staying overnight: No
Getting there: Inside Kariya Highway Oasis, a service area on the Isewan Expressway that doubles as a public park with a Ferris wheel and a farmers' market, and which can also be entered on foot from the ordinary road. There is no courtesy shuttle - the house asks visitors to come by public transport or car.
