A 90-year-old inn above Mikawa Bay that did something almost no Japanese bathhouse does: it wrote out, in Japanese and English, why it now lets tattooed guests into the public baths, and opened a nightly window from 21:00 to 23:00 for them. Groups of three or more tattooed bathers are still turned away. The baths themselves are a granite main hall, a cave bath and a cypress garden open-air, with a serious Finnish sauna programme (self-loyly, two private sauna rooms) that is the reason most day visitors come. The water is a mild alkaline simple spring from 1,200 m down, branded 'bihakusen'. Free shuttle from Mikawa-Miya Station.

The baths

Indoor bath

Kirara-no-yu, a granite-lined main bath, and a separate cave bath. Baths other than the garden open-air swap between men and women the next morning.

Hina-no-yu, a cypress-scented garden open-air bath. It is on the same floor as the main bath but you have to dress to walk between them.

Day visits: Yes — you can bathe without staying overnight.
Morning session 05:30-09:30 (last entry 08:00); afternoon session 14:00-23:00. Reservations advised; entry is capped at busy times.
Day visit price: ¥3,000
3,000 yen on weekdays and 4,000 yen at weekends and on public holidays for the day-use sauna-and-bath ticket, towels included. A private sauna room is a further 11,000 yen per room and must be booked. The tattoo window (21:00-23:00) falls inside the afternoon session.
Staying overnight: Yes
Getting there: On a hillside above Mikawa Bay in the Miya Onsen quarter of Gamagori. From Mikawa-Miya Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line (change at Toyohashi from the Tokaido Shinkansen) it is about 7 minutes by the inn's free shuttle bus.
