The baths

Indoor bath

A 2009 building modelled on the Hosokawa domain's own Gozen-yu bathhouse: 1st floor a neighbourhood public bath, 2nd floor a large bath with sauna and open-air bath, 3rd floor private family baths. Only the 2nd-floor large bath is running at present.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

DO NOT PLAN AROUND THE NORMAL PRICES. The 2026 Kumamoto earthquake of 28 July closed this bathhouse; it has since reopened only the 2nd-floor large bath, free of charge, 15:00-20:00, limited to 20 minutes per person, and it may close earlier than advertised when the water runs short. Bring your own towel (soap and shampoo are provided) and do not telephone — there are no staff to answer. The 1st-floor Honyu entrance is closed and the produce shop is shut. Normal pricing, for whenever it returns, is 520 yen adults / 310 yen children for Banpei-yu and 200 / 50 yen for the Honyu public bath, 10:00-22:00, closed the 3rd Tuesday and New Year's Day.

Getting there
At 316 Hinagu-Nakamachi, Yatsushiro City, in the old Hinagu spa town on the Hisatsu Orange Railway. Hinagu was very badly hit by the 28 July 2026 earthquake — the hot-spring association's inns lost their supply of spring water, the 140-year-old Yanagiya inn's main building collapsed and the registered cultural property Kinparo had its gate and walls come down. Check before travelling; several inns are not operating at all.
