A hot spring made entirely of private rooms — eleven of them, all different, from 1,000 yen an hour for however many of you there are. Because nothing here is a shared bath, the usual reasons a Japanese bathhouse turns people away do not arise in the same way; the operator publishes no tattoo rule either way, so ask when you pay. Two on-site sources run free-flowing, and the roof over each room slides open.

The baths

Private (kashikiri) bath

Eleven private rooms, each a completely different bath — cedar, hinoki, keyaki, natural stone, marble, a children's tub, an old-style goemon iron bath, a lying-down bath. Some rooms add a small resting area beside the changing space. Two sources on the property feed the rooms free-flowing at about 42C, and the ceilings open mechanically so you get sky and the sound of the river without being visible from the far bank.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

On the bank of the Tsuetate River at 4112 Shimojo, Oguni Town, a short walk from the Tsuetate hot-spring village. Parking on site. A separate annexe has baths for dogs. Reaching Tsuetate without a car means an infrequent bus from JR Hita station on the Oita side.
