One minute from JR Aso station, 400 yen, open until 22:00 — for a traveller crossing Kyushu by train this is the easy one. It is a municipal bathhouse rather than a scenic bath, but the water is the real thing: 53C at source, 260 litres a minute, brown and soft, run to overflow rather than recirculated. Sauna, cold plunge, an open-air bath facing trees, a foot bath and a lounge you can sit in afterwards. The website carries English throughout.

Indoor bath

Main indoor bathhouse with a sauna and a cold plunge. Sodium/magnesium sulphate-bicarbonate spring (hypotonic, neutral, high-temperature), 53.0C at source and 260 litres a minute — soft, brown water run free-flowing so that every tub overflows continuously, with the building professionally cleaned daily.

Getting there
At 1538-3 Kurokawa, Aso City — one minute on foot from JR Aso station on the Hohi line, which makes it the easiest onsen in this prefecture to reach without a car. By road, about an hour from the Kumamoto interchange via Route 57. There is a foot bath and a lounge overlooking the garden inside.
