A 200-year-old bath high on Mt Aso where the water rises through the floor of the tub, unheated and undiluted, with gas bubbling up beside you. Because Suzume-no-yu is mixed-gender and everyone bathes in a supplied garment, the usual awkwardness of a mixed bath — and much of the usual awkwardness about bodies generally — is designed out of it. Nothing here is walkable; you need a car and a mountain road.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

The baths

Open-air bath

Suzume-no-yu, the reason people come: a cloudy bath where the water and gas bubble up through the gravel floor of the tub itself. It is mixed-gender and bathed in clothed — everyone wears a supplied yuami garment — which the inn frames as putting old and young, men and women on equal footing. Simple acidic sulphur spring (hydrogen sulphide type).

Indoor bath

Moto-no-yu and Tamago-no-yu, simple acidic springs (hypotonic, acidic, high-temperature).
