Kurokawa's own source bath, in the dead centre of the village where every inn, shop and cafe is a few minutes on foot — but it is a bare room with an honesty box and nowhere to sit. Rated only on what can be checked from the map and the town's description; the water and the room itself have not been confirmed from a primary source.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

The baths

Indoor bath

One small indoor tub each for men and women. Minami-Oguni Town describes it as the original source bath of Kurokawa, on the spot where, by legend, hot water sprang up around a headless Jizo statue, and as a bath locals have used since long before Kurokawa became a tourist village.
