The one inn in Kurokawa that answers the tattoo question in writing rather than leaving you to phone: its FAQ simply says it does not restrict them. A quiet 14-room house five minutes uphill from the village, with a stone open-air bath ringed by planting and a milky sulphur water running free from a 60C source — the strongest water of anything on this list. Day visitors get the open-air bath for 600 yen between 10:00 and 14:30; the indoor and private baths are for staying guests only.

The baths

Open-air bath

Kodachi-no-yu, one bath each for men and women (no rotation), built from Kuju-range stone with planting growing out of the rocks. Sulphur water free-flowing from a 60C source, held in the tub at about 40-42C. No showers at the open-air bath. Staying guests 15:00-23:00 and 06:00-09:30; day visitors 10:00-15:00.

Indoor bath

Indoor bath under exposed roof beams, one each for men and women. Explicitly closed to day visitors — staying guests only.

Overnight guests only

Private (kashikiri) bath

Four private baths in cut stone, 1,000 yen for 45 minutes, booked at the front desk on the day. Staying guests only, and evenings only (reception until 21:30) — not available in the morning. The inn deliberately keeps the charge out of the room rate so that guests who do not use them are not paying for them.

Overnight guests only

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

600 yen for the open-air bath. Day visitors get the open-air bath only — the inn states that its indoor bath is closed to non-staying guests, and the four private baths are for staying guests as well. The 1,500 yen nyuto-tegata pass, valid at 25 Kurokawa inns for any three baths, is accepted here.
Staying overnight: Yes
Getting there: At 6630-1 Manganji, Minami-Oguni Town, about five minutes on foot uphill from the centre of Kurokawa. The last 230 m of road is very narrow; the inn offers a pick-up if you park at the association car park instead, and also collects staying guests from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop by prior arrangement. 16 free parking spaces. 14 guest rooms, all non-smoking. Kurokawa sits at about 700 m altitude — snow tyres or chains are advisable from December to February.
