A Taisho-era-styled inn in the Yuya Onsen gorge, and the one place in this batch where the water is the reason to come: source number 7 at Yuya, a sodium-calcium chloride spring at 35.9C, run through the baths without recirculation. The garden open-air bath hangs over the Uren River, with a cypress bath and a larger hall bath swapping between the sexes at 13:00 and 21:00. Day-use exists but only as a meal package, so it is really a place to stay. No tattoo policy is published, so ask before booking.

The baths

Open-air bath

Garden open-air bath looking down on the Uren River as it runs through the Horaikyo gorge. Men and women swap: men 13:00-21:00, women 21:00-13:00.

Indoor bath

A folk-craft cypress bath and the larger Hoekisen hall bath with windows onto the hills. Men use the indoor baths 21:00-13:00, women 13:00-21:00.

The inn lists day-use plans on its own site, but they are sold as lunch-plus-bath packages through the booking engine rather than as a walk-in bathing fee, and no price is published in the page text. Book ahead rather than turning up.

In the Yuya Onsen quarter of Shinshiro, on the Uren River in the Okumikawa hills. Yuya-Onsen Station on the JR Iida Line is the local stop; guests staying here may also use the baths at the sister inn Yu-no-kaze HAZU.
