The public bathhouse of Tamatsukuri, and the cheapest way to try the spring that made the town's reputation without booking a ryokan. It is a municipal-style building with meeting rooms and a shop rather than anywhere atmospheric, and the baths are large and plain, but it is open late, a few minutes' walk from the riverside inn street and the Himegami shrine, and steps from a bus stop. Bring or buy a bath towel if you want the sauna, and note it closes on Mondays.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

The baths

Indoor bath

Large indoor baths fed by Tamatsukuri's sulphate-chloride water, which a pharmaceutical company's skin testing rated the highest of the 180 springs it had analysed for moisture retention - the basis of the 'beauty spring' name the town trades on. Dry and mist saunas as well.

Open-air bath

Open-air baths under open sky, in the same water.
