Can you bathe here with a tattoo?
This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.
Staying overnight
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. A private or in-room bath is available, which is often an option for tattooed guests.
How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Open-air bath
Ryugu-no-yu, a mixed-sex open-air bath of about 120 tsubo (roughly 400 sq m) in the ryokan's garden, said to be the largest in Japan, free-flowing from the source. Bathing wear is laid out in the changing room - paper trunks for men, a wrap cloth for women - so mixed bathing does not mean bathing uncovered. Open 5:30-9:30 and 15:00-23:30. There is a women-only indoor bath for anyone who would rather not.
Indoor bath
Keisen and Kasen, indoor and open-air baths swapped between the sexes, open 5:30-9:30 and 15:00-24:00.
Private (kashikiri) bath
Seisen, a private bath booked by overnight guests in 45-minute slots starting hourly from 16:00 to 21:00, with 15 minutes of cleaning between them.
In-room bath
Two special rooms have their own open-air hot-spring bath; three detached special rooms are among the 58 rooms.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
