Can you bathe here with a tattoo?

This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.

Visiting for the day

No — tattooed guests are turned away

Guests with tattoos are refused entry to the facility, so private baths are not an option either.

A resort complex rather than a bathhouse: dark brown water from the Chosei source, cypress and rock open-air tubs, a theatre, a pool and nap rooms, open from 10:00 straight through to 08:00 the next morning. It is built for spending a whole day and night, which is what it is worth coming for; the setting is flat inland countryside near the Kujukuri coast rather than a view. The free shuttle from Mobara Station needs booking.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.
