Japan's southernmost and westernmost hot spring, on Miyakojima, and one of the few places in the country where the bathing culture bends: alongside the nude open-air and sea-view baths there is a swimsuit jungle pool in subtropical planting, warm all year, which families and couples can use together. The source comes up at 50C from 1,250 m down at 800 tonnes a day. Five private rooms with their own free-flowing open-air bath are bookable by the hour, which is worth knowing if you would rather not bathe in public. It opens at 11:00, later than most, and you need a car.

The baths

Open-air bath

An open-air bath at around 41C set among Okinawan stone, trees and flowers, plus a separate view bath at around 42C looking out to the sea. There is also a swimsuit-only jungle pool fed by the same source - bring your own swimsuit or rent one for 510 yen. Saunas: a 90C Finnish sauna for men, and a Mongolian rock-salt sauna at about 80C and a 40C amethyst steam sauna for women.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Five private rooms with their own free-flowing open-air bath, reclining sofa, shower room and TV. From 8,800 yen for 90 minutes (18,700 yen for the ocean-view room), which includes the entry fee for two adults; a half-day 5.5-hour plan is also sold. Extra guests are 2,200 yen each.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

Day visits: Yes — you can bathe without staying overnight.
11:00-22:00 (last entry 21:30). Closed all day 13-16 April 2027 for maintenance.
Day visit price: ¥2,000
2,000 yen for ages 12 and over and 1,000 yen for ages 4-11, dropping to 1,600 and 800 yen for guests staying in the Shigira resort; under-4s free but without towels. The price includes towels, toiletries and both taxes. No re-entry once you leave.
Staying overnight: No
Getting there: In the Shigira Seven Mile Resort at Ueno on the south coast of Miyakojima, about 20 minutes by car from Miyako Airport. Free parking, but large coaches cannot enter. A rental car is effectively required.
