The obvious bath to pair with the Adachi Museum of Art, which is a minute's walk away: free-flowing radon-bearing water in a spring recorded since the 720s and used as a feudal lord's bath. For anyone with tattoos this is one of the better options in Shimane - the private open-air rock bath can be hired by day visitors, though only between 12:30 and 14:00, so it has to be planned around lunchtime. Day bathing shuts entirely from 15:00 to 18:00. Staying is the relaxed way to do it: both private baths are free for guests and open all night.

Large indoor bath in free-flowing water that is radioactive as well as sodium-calcium chloride-sulphate, emerging at 45-54C. Overnight guests have it from check-in until 9:00 the next morning, through the night.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Two private baths - Iwatsuyu, an open-air rock bath, and Shiratsuyu, a large indoor one - in 50-minute slots. Free for overnight guests, who book them in arrival order at check-in (reserved 15:00-21:00, then free use from 22:00 to 9:00 if empty). Day visitors pay a 1,000 yen hire charge and can only be taken between 12:30 and 14:00. This is the one way into this water without using a shared bath.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

1,000 yen for adults and 300 yen for children in the large baths. A private bath - the open-air rock bath Iwatsuyu or the large indoor Shiratsuyu - can be added for a 1,000 yen hire charge per 50-minute slot on top of the bathing fee, but day-visitor reception for it runs only 12:30-14:00. Towels sold for 200 yen, bath towels rented for 200 yen.

In Furukawa-cho, Yasugi, one minute on foot from the Adachi Museum of Art - the garden regularly ranked Japan's best, which is what brings most foreign visitors to this corner of Shimane. The museum runs a free shuttle from JR Yasugi Station every day, about 20 minutes, for people visiting the museum.
