As close to raw spring water as a bath in Japan gets: undrilled, unheated, undiluted, and running from source to tub in about a metre, with 500 years of the same family behind the counter. The bathhouse itself is bare - no showers, no amenities, a one-hour limit, and nowhere to sit afterwards - and there is nothing to look at from the water. It stands in the middle of the World Heritage Yunotsu townscape, so the second bathhouse, the cafe and the preserved streets are all a short walk away. Check the day before you go: Mondays and Thursdays it shuts to the public at 8:00.

The baths

Indoor bath

One bath hall per sex, each holding three tubs at different temperatures - hot (46-48C), warm (43-44C), and a 38-40C tub signposted for first-timers. The spring rises under its own pressure and reaches the tubs from only 1-1.6 m away with no water added, no heating, no cooling and no recirculation, and the minerals have coated the whole room in pale brown deposits. There are no showers and nothing is provided: bring a towel and soap or buy them at the counter (face towel 300 yen, soap 100 yen).

Yes — you can bathe without staying overnight.
6:00-20:00 (last entry 19:30) from March to November; 6:00-19:00 (last entry 18:30) from December to February. On Mondays and Thursdays the general public can only bathe 6:00-8:00 (last entry 7:30).
Day visit price
¥500
500 yen for adults (junior-high age and up) and 250 yen for children aged 1 to primary school, for up to one hour in the bath. From January 2026 the 9:00-16:00 slot on Mondays and Thursdays is reserved for annual members (5,000 yen a year, capped at 20-30 people per sex, one-hour slots of five bathers); if a member cancels on the day, a walk-in may be let in for 1,000 yen including a towel, but this cannot be booked in advance. Admission is free on 7 July to anyone who has visited the adjoining Onkoji temple and collected a pass.

About 5 minutes from JR Yunotsu Station on the Ota city community bus, in the preserved townscape of Yunotsu. Three free car parks (5, 5 and 12 spaces); campers and minibuses are directed to the third, 200 m away.
