Terraced open-air pools on the bank of the Gamata River, reached across a suspension footbridge, with the mixed-gender pool explicitly allowing swimsuits and bath towels and separate men's and women's baths beside it. Facilities are rudimentary - no shampoo or soap - and closures are irregular, but this is the Okuhida riverside bath most people picture.

The baths

Open-air bath

MIXED-GENDER open-air bath in three tiers beside the Gamata River, the largest of the pools. Swimsuits and bath towels are explicitly allowed in it, which is unusual and makes it approachable. The women-only bath is close by, and the inn rents a bathing garment (yuami) to non-staying women for 500 yen; overnight female guests borrow one free.

In Shinhotaka Onsen, across a suspension footbridge over the Gamata River - you park and walk over. About 90 minutes by bus from Takayama Nohi Bus Centre towards Shinhotaka, then a short walk. Free parking for about 30 cars.
