The baths
Open-air bath
A big open-air rock pool right on the bank of the Gamata River under the Kamata bridge, with the North Alps above it. MIXED-GENDER, and since July 2025 a swimsuit or bath towel is COMPULSORY for everyone - it is no longer a nude bath. Bring a swimsuit if you want to use it. The changing area is minimal and open, which is exactly why the swimsuit rule exists. There is no roof and no indoor bath.

- ¥300There is no admission fee as such - you drop about 300 yen into a box as a cleaning contribution. Unstaffed, so bring coins.

- Getting there
- Beside the Gamata River on National Route 471 in Shinhotaka Onsen, near the Nakao Kogen area. Bus from Takayama Nohi Bus Centre towards Shinhotaka (about 90 minutes) or drive; there is a small pull-in. A car is much easier here than in the towns.
