A river-stone bath on the bank of the Hii, in water the Izumo Fudoki described in 733 and which still arrives at 43C with nothing done to it - no heating, no dilution, no recirculation. The settling boxes and ladles make it feel closer to a mountain stream than a bathhouse, and there is a small open-air bath facing the river. For 1,100 yen a day visitor can hire the private open-air bath, which is a rare option at this price. It is out in the Okuizumo hills though: a taxi from Kisuki Station or a car, with little else within walking distance.

The baths

Indoor bath

An indoor bath built from river stones on the bank of the Hii river, with three settling boxes that the 43C source runs through constantly before overflowing into the tub - the local way is to sit on the stones and ladle the water over yourself from the boxes. Four spouts, river gravel on the bottom. No heating, no cooling, no water added and no recirculation.

Private (kashikiri) bath

A private open-air bath (the family bath) hired in 50-minute slots for 1,100 yen on top of the entry fee, free for overnight guests at Yunouekan. Day visitors can book it, which makes this one of the few cheap public baths in Shimane with a private option.

600 yen for adults, 150 yen for children and 100 yen for infants; a 10-visit adult pass is 5,000 yen. The private open-air bath costs a further 1,100 yen per 50-minute slot on top of the bathing fee, and is free for guests staying at Yunouekan. There is also a foot bath.

In Yumura, Kisuki-cho, Unnan, on the Hii river between Kisuki and Yoshida. About 15 minutes by taxi from Kisuki Station on the JR Kisuki line, or 15 minutes by car from the Mitoya-Kisuki interchange on the Matsue Expressway. Three inns and an auberge sit along the river here; the bath is run by Yunouekan.
