The best water in this set and the hardest to reach. A sodium-calcium chloride spring rises at 44.7C and 1,120 litres a minute, is poured through the baths with nothing added or heated, and the whole bathhouse is drained, scrubbed and refilled overnight - for 600 yen. The building is Kumano cedar and the valley around it is empty; the trolley train that used to carry bathers in through a mine tunnel is currently suspended. A private bath can be booked by day visitors, but no tattoo rule is published.

600 yen for adults, 300 yen for children; a 13-visit ticket is 6,000 yen. A private bath is 1,500 yen per 60 minutes on weekdays, 2,000 yen at weekends and the day before a holiday and 2,500 yen in peak season, all on top of the bathing fee, with last reception at 19:00. A 1,100 yen pass gives unlimited same-day bathing here and at Hotel Seiryuso.

Deep in the old mining country of Kiwa, about 35 minutes by car from central Kumano on Route 311, and close to the Maruyama Senmaida rice terraces, the Akagi castle ruins and the Doro-kyo gorge. Without a car, take the Kumano Kodo Seiryuso bus from Kumano-shi Station, about 50 minutes. The trolley train that used to run to the bathhouse through a mine tunnel is suspended indefinitely for safety inspection. Run by the Kumano city development foundation, with self-catering bungalows, lodges and cottages for long stays.
