The easiest genuinely good bath to reach in Mie: eight minutes on foot from a Kintetsu terminus, open from 6 am to midnight, 600 yen on a weekday. The water is the real draw - 750 litres a minute arriving at about 42C from 1,200 m down, poured through the baths and even the showers with nothing added, heated or recirculated, faintly sulphurous and slippery. The setting is a food-and-spa complex rather than a mountain hideaway, which is why it scores low on surroundings and high on everything you can do without getting back in the car. Tattoos are refused at the door.

600 yen on weekdays and 800 yen at weekends and on public holidays (adults, junior-high age and over). Children aged 3 to elementary school 300/400 yen, under 3 free. Golden Week, Obon and the New Year period are charged at the weekend rate. Holders of a Japanese disability certificate pay half. Re-entry is allowed within 4 hours. Towel rental 100 yen, bath towel 200 yen.

Getting there
An 8-minute (600 m) walk from Yunoyama-Onsen Station on the Kintetsu Yunoyama Line, or 3 minutes on the local bus signed for Aqua Ignis. Direct highway buses from Meitetsu Bus Center in Nagoya take about an hour. By car, 5 minutes from Komono IC or 15 minutes from Yokkaichi IC.
