A city-run bathhouse in the hills above Hitachiomiya with two wings, Higashi-kan and Nishi-kan, that swap between men and women on odd and even days, each with an open-air bath and a dry sauna. The water is a low-tonic alkaline simple spring, the sort that leaves the skin smooth rather than announcing itself. Late afternoon is the bargain: 700 yen after 16:00 any day of the week. It is deep in the countryside with no public transport at all.

The baths

Indoor bath

Higashi-kan has an indoor bath with jet, foot and bubble baths and a dry sauna; Nishi-kan has an indoor bath with a lying-down bath, a bubble bath, a dry sauna and a cascade bath. The two swap between men and women on odd and even days.
