A riverside inn in Kamikatsu, the mountain town known for its zero-waste policy and terraced rice fields. The baths are indoor, but the upstairs rock bath looks straight down on the Katsuura river, and the whole place is quiet in the way only a valley an hour from the nearest city can be. The water is heated by a wood-chip boiler rather than being a strong source, so come for the setting, not the chemistry.

The baths

Indoor bath

Two bath floors that swap between men and women every other day: a stone-lined main bath on the ground floor and a rock bath of local blue stone upstairs, with a bench where you can sit and look out over the Katsuura river. Both have bubble and jet tubs, a sauna and a cold plunge. The cypress tub has been out of use since 2025. The water is heated with the inn's own wood-chip biomass boiler.

Getting there
Deep in the mountains of Kamikatsu, about an hour's drive south-west of Tokushima city. Without a car: Tokushima Bus from Tokushima Station to Yokose-nishi, change to the Kamikatsu town bus to Tsukigadani Onsen-guchi, then a 5-minute walk.
