The cheapest honest hot spring in the Okukuji hills: 710 yen on a weekday buys a sodium sulfate-chloride bath, a bubble bath, a dry sauna, a cold plunge and a large open-air bath ringed by forest, in a town-run health centre a few minutes from Hitachi-Daigo Station. The evening rate of 500 yen is better value still. No tattoo policy is published, so ask at the desk before undressing.

Adults 710 yen on weekdays and 1,010 yen at weekends and on public holidays; children 350 / 500 yen. After 17:00 it drops to 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for children.

At 15-12 Yata, Daigo Town, in the Okukuji hills of northern Ibaraki. About 5 minutes by taxi from Hitachi-Daigo Station on the JR Suigun Line, and within reach of the Fukuroda Falls by car.
