Can you bathe here with a tattoo?

This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.

Visiting for the day

They have not said

The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. A private (kashikiri) bath is available, which is often an option for tattooed guests.

The only bathable UNESCO World Heritage hot spring anywhere: a wooden hut straddling the stream in the middle of Yunomine, holding one tub hollowed out of the bedrock that two or three people fill, used privately in 30-minute turns by numbered tag. The water is said to change colour up to seven times a day, there is no shower and barely room to undress, and it stands directly on the Kumano Kodo where pilgrims have purified themselves for centuries.

The baths

Private (kashikiri) bath

THE ONLY BATHABLE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE HOT SPRING IN THE WORLD. Tsuboyu is a tiny wooden hut straddling the stream in the middle of Yunomine village, containing one small tub hollowed out of the natural bedrock - two or three people fill it. It is inscribed as part of the Kumano pilgrimage routes because pilgrims on the Kumano Kodo purified themselves here (yugori) before reaching Kumano Hongu Taisha, and it is still on the walking route. Use is PRIVATE: you take a numbered tag at the counter of the public bathhouse next door, wait your turn, and get the hut to yourself in 30-minute rotations. The water is said to change colour up to seven times in a day. There is no shower and barely any changing space - just the tub and the stream underneath.

Open to day visitors

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
