Four springs rising within fifty metres of each other feed the tubs, and the milky mixed open-air bath in front of the thatched Honjin is the image English-language guides use whenever they write 'secret onsen'. It is old and plain rather than comfortable and it fills with day visitors; the bus leaves you either a 50-minute walk away or dependent on ringing ahead for the guest shuttle.

The baths

Open-air bath

The milky white mixed open-air bath in front of the thatched Honjin is the image most English-language guides use for 'secret onsen'. Semboku City's own leaflet lists one mixed and one women-only open-air bath here.

Indoor bath

Four different springs rise within 50 m of each other - Shiro-yu, Kuro-yu, Naka-no-yu and Taki-no-yu - and feed separate indoor tubs, including a beating-water tub and the 'medo-kko' baths.

Adults 700 yen, children 300 yen, towels sold for 200 yen. Day-use is suspended every Monday while the open-air baths are cleaned (moved to the next weekday when Monday is a public holiday). Cash only. Rest space is the entrance of building No. 2; rooms 6 and 7 of the thatched Honjin can be rented as paid rest rooms.

Getting there
Deep in the Nyuto hot-spring group in the national forest above Lake Tazawa. Take the Ugo Kotsu 'Nyuto-sen' bus from JR Tazawako Station (about 45-50 minutes); getting off at Tsuru-no-yu-iriguchi leaves a 50-minute walk, so ring in the morning to ask whether you can ride the guest bus from the Alpa Komakusa stop instead. Staying guests are met at Alpa Komakusa.
