Tamagawa Onsen
玉川温泉
Can you bathe here with a tattoo?
This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.
Visiting for the day
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. Please contact the facility.
Staying overnight
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. A private or in-room bath is available, which is often an option for tattooed guests.
How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Indoor bath
A hiba-wood hall with 11 tubs so you can pick your strength: 100% source water, 50% diluted, and weakly acidic tubs. The source is Japan's most acidic large-volume spring (pH around 1.2), which is why the tubs are graded - do not start at 100%. Open 3:00-24:00 for staying guests.
Private (kashikiri) bath
The private bath is explicitly for staying guests only (7:00-21:00), intended for people who need a carer with them or who find the big hall hard to face - so it is not a fallback for day visitors.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

- Getting there
- A cure resort at 800 m in the Hachimantai mountains reached from JR Tazawako Station by Ugo Kotsu bus or the seasonal Yumeguri-go. The inn closes for the winter because National Route 341 shuts - its sister inn Shin-Tamagawa Onsen stays open all year and is the winter alternative. Even at the shoulders of the season the road can close overnight (19:00-8:00) for ice. Bear precautions are in force on the natural bedrock-bath trail.
