The classic Kanto secret onsen: an inn you can only reach on foot or by its own shuttle, with four open-air baths looking straight at a waterfall in old-growth forest. The water self-flows at 100 percent, unheated and unfiltered, so the flakes of mineral in it are the real thing. Three of the open-air baths are mixed - a licensing relic that could not be built today - and all of them become women-only from 21:00 to 22:00. Rooms come as log cabins or an older main house used by hikers and cure bathers. Note that day-use bathing stopped in February 2025 even though other sites still list it.

Day-use bathing ended in February 2025 and is no longer offered; the lunch-and-transfer rest package has also been withdrawn. Third-party sites still quote a 500-yen day-use fee, which is out of date. Bathing here now means staying the night.

Getting there
Deep inside Nikko National Park, beyond the point where private cars are banned. Leave the car at the free Meotobuchi car park and either walk the 90-minute hiking trail or take the inn's shuttle, which is free but only for overnight guests and must be booked in advance (departures at 9:30, 10:30, 12:00, 15:00 and 16:30; returns at 9:00, 10:00, 11:30 and 14:30). The shuttle connects with the Nikko municipal bus from Kinugawa-Onsen Station, about 100 minutes. In winter the walk needs full mountain kit.
