How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Open-air bath
Yukimi-no-Yu, the original 1929 open-air bath. Mixed bathing. Given priority for hot water in winter.
Open-air bath
Takimi-no-Yu, a rock bath facing the waterfall head-on. Mixed bathing.
Open-air bath
Shakunage-no-Yu, built by a stonemason around 1965 right beside the falls, looking down on them. Mixed bathing.
Open-air bath
A fourth open-air bath with a glimpse of the falls through the trees, alternating between men and women.
Indoor bath
Women-only indoor bath, built around 1971 and designed to feel like an open-air bath. Open 14:00 to 08:00.
Indoor bath
Men-only indoor bath, the oldest tub at the inn, kept from its mountain-hut days. Open 14:00 to 08:00.
Practical details
- Day visits
- No — overnight guests only.
- Day visit price
- Not confirmedDay-use bathing ended in February 2025 and is no longer offered; the lunch-and-transfer rest package has also been withdrawn. Third-party sites still quote a 500-yen day-use fee, which is out of date. Bathing here now means staying the night.
- Staying overnight
- Yes
- Getting there
- Deep inside Nikko National Park, beyond the point where private cars are banned. Leave the car at the free Meotobuchi car park and either walk the 90-minute hiking trail or take the inn's shuttle, which is free but only for overnight guests and must be booked in advance (departures at 9:30, 10:30, 12:00, 15:00 and 16:30; returns at 9:00, 10:00, 11:30 and 14:30). The shuttle connects with the Nikko municipal bus from Kinugawa-Onsen Station, about 100 minutes. In winter the walk needs full mountain kit.
