Staying overnight

Yes, if you take a private bath

Tattoos are not allowed in the shared baths. A private or in-room bath is available, which usually means you can still bathe — but this has not been confirmed with the facility.

Not confirmed by the facility. We worked this out from the bath layout, so please check before you go.

Set highest in Sounkyo, so the gorge open-air bath 'Tenka no Yu' looks straight out over the canyon, and three separate bath halls give day visitors room to spread out. Day-use ends at 17:00 and is cut back to 15:00 whenever the hotel is busy with overnight guests, so phone before making the trip.

Scored from official photos, maps and transport information — not from a visit.

The baths

Indoor bath

Three large bath halls (view bath, gorge bath and European-style bath). Shampoo, conditioner, body soap and hairdryers provided; lotion and milk on the women's side only. Baby beds in three places on both sides.

Open to day visitors

Open-air bath

Two open-air baths including the gorge bath 'Tenka no Yu'. The hotel sits highest in Sounkyo, so the views are the selling point.

Open to day visitors

Private (kashikiri) bath

The gorge open-air bath 'Tenka no Yu' can be reserved privately: four groups a day, 50-minute slots at 15:00 and 16:00, 5,000 yen per booking plus the bathing fee, booked by the previous day. Not available at Golden Week, Obon or New Year. The site does not say whether day visitors may book it, and the hotel's tattoo notice is worded as covering bathing generally.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
