At 1,280 m this is the highest hot-spring inn in Hokkaido, and the open-air bath looks straight out at the Tokachi volcanic range; two sources feed it, an iron-brown water and a cold acidic one, both free-flowing with nothing added and nothing reheated. Reaching it without a car means a sparse town bus from Kamifurano, and there is no tatami hall to sit out a whole day, so come for the mountain and the water.

The baths

Indoor bath

Two indoor bathhouses, Oiwa-no-Yu and Koiwa-no-Yu, which swap between men and women by time of day. Each also holds a small, cold acidic-spring tub fed by a second source (Ryounkaku Well No. 1); the inn warns the acidic tub can be out of use in winter. Sauna available 10:00-20:00.

Open-air bath

Open-air bath facing the Tokachi volcanic range head-on from 1,280 m. The women's open-air bath is mainly a cave-style bath; overnight guests get both because the sections rotate. In winter the open-air water runs cool and the bath is sometimes closed - the inn posts live bath temperatures for each side on its home page.

Adults (junior high school age and over) 1,000 yen, elementary school children 500 yen, preschoolers free; a 10-visit pass is 7,700 yen. Face towel 250 yen to buy, bath towel 300 yen to rent. The inn states that day-use entry may be capped when the ryokan is busy, and there is no fixed closing day (irregular holidays, plus occasional whole-building maintenance closures announced on the news page), so check before making the drive up.

You can get here without a car, but only just: a Kamifurano town bus runs from JR Kamifurano Station to the Ryounkaku-mae terminus in about 40 minutes, and services are few, so check the timetable before relying on it. By car it is 60 minutes from Asahikawa Airport and 45 minutes from Furano; the last 5 km is a steep mountain climb and the inn asks winter drivers to use 4WD with studless tyres. Snow can linger on the road into early May, and the Tokachidake Skyline road is closed over winter. Free parking.
