Can you bathe here with a tattoo?

This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.

Visiting for the day

No — tattooed guests are turned away

Guests with tattoos are refused entry to the facility, so private baths are not an option either.

A long-established Arima ryokan with three separate bathing floors of kinsen and a pair of private open-air baths that each have their own garden, a few minutes on foot from the station. The setting is the middle of the village and the views are of the inn's own grounds, so the draw is the water and the upkeep.

Scored from official photos, maps and transport information — not from a visit.

The baths

Indoor bath

Three separate bathing floors — 'Ichi-no-yu', 'Ni-no-yu' and 'San-no-yu' — all using Arima's kinsen.

Open-air bath

Open-air sections attached to the main bathing floors.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Two private open-air baths, 'Asagiri' and 'Yugiri', attached to San-no-yu, each with its own garden. Reservation required, extra charge. NOTE: this is NOT a workaround for tattooed guests — see the tattoo policy.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
