Kyoto Arashiyama Onsen Kadensho
京都 嵐山温泉 花伝抄 · Arashiyama Onsen
Can you bathe here with a tattoo?
This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.
Staying overnight
Tattoos are not allowed in the shared baths, but you can bathe in a private or in-room bath.

How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Private (kashikiri) bath
The reason to know this inn: five private bath houses along the 'yumeguri koji' lane, all FREE and with no reservation system - you just check the 'in use' lamp and walk in - available 24 hours. Three of them are open-air: 'Akane no Yu' (modern brick), 'Chikutei no Yu' (surrounded by bamboo) and 'Kinu no Yu' (white Western style); the other two are indoor, 'Kiri no Yu' (steam bath plus a barrel tub for one) and 'Muso no Yu' (hinoki cypress). Note these five are heated tap-water baths, not hot spring water.
Indoor bath
The main bath house 'Heian no Yu', whose indoor stone bath uses the natural Arashiyama hot spring (simple spring, hypotonic and weakly alkaline, 35.2 degrees at source). Open 15:00 to 11:00 the next morning; the sauna closes 1:00-5:00.
Open-air bath
Open-air rock bath with a medicinal bath. The inn states the open-air bath is not hot spring water.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

- Getting there
- 5-4 Arashiyama Nishi-ichikawa-cho, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto (postal code 616-0003). About 1 minute on foot from Hankyu Arashiyama Station, 10 minutes from Randen Arashiyama, 20 minutes from JR Saga-Arashiyama (16 minutes from Kyoto Station on the Sagano Line). 101 rooms; 27 on-site parking spaces at 1,500 yen per night, first come first served. Do not confuse it with the same company's Umekoji Kadensho and Omuro Kadensho elsewhere in Kyoto - the inn says this happens often.
