Yamanaka's communal bath, unusual in that the men's and women's halves are separate buildings facing each other across the street - the men's a heavy Tenpyo-style hall with a deep, waist-high tub. Indoor tubs only and nowhere to sit afterwards, but it stands at the top of the Yuge-kaido shopping street with the Kakusenkei gorge path a few minutes away.

The baths

Indoor bath

Unusually, the men's and women's baths are in two separate buildings facing each other across the street - rare anywhere in Japan. The men's building is a heavy Tenpyo-style hall with a deep waist-high tub; the women's is a lighter, curved building next door to the Yamanaka-za theatre. Simple alkaline water. Indoor tubs only.
