The most equipped bath in Totsukawa - nine tubs, a sauna and a hot-spring pool - on a 70C sodium bicarbonate spring the village guarantees is never recirculated or diluted. The catch is the five-hour day-use window from noon, which is easy to miss if you are travelling on the three-a-day bus.

Every onsen on this site is scored against the same written rubric, and every score has been reviewed by the editor. The ones marked Visited were also bathed in personally.

The baths

Indoor bath

Run by Hotel Subaru as a public bath house within the Subaru-no-Sato resort. The operator counts nine different tubs including ceramic and cypress baths and a pounding-water bath, all on 100 percent flow-through spring water.

Open-air bath

There are open-air tubs on both the men's and women's sides, each with a drinking-spring point - the hotel lists three such points in total, the third by the foot bath.

Getting there
In the Subaru-no-Sato complex at Totsukawa Onsen, which also has a free foot bath and the village's hand-powered 'yaen' river cable basket. Reached by the Nara Kotsu Yagi-Shingu bus to Totsukawa Onsen (three services a day each way, around four hours from Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station); the day-use window is only five hours long, so check the bus timetable first.
