Cloudy, strongly acidic sulphur water straight from the Onsen Shrine's own source in a wooden bath house first built in 1636 - the oldest and the best water in Naruko, with two tubs a few degrees apart on each side. No view, no seating and no reason to linger, but it is a short walk uphill from the station in the middle of a town of kokeshi shops and bath houses.

The baths

Indoor bath

Wooden bath house first built in 1636 and the oldest bath in Naruko, fed by the Taki-no-yu source of Onsen Shrine. Men's and women's sides each have two tubs - one at 44-46C and one at 39-41C - filled with cloudy, strongly acidic sulphur water.

Day visit price: ¥300
Adults 300 yen (raised from 200 yen on 1 April 2024), children 100 yen. This is a bare community bath house run for the town: no shampoo or soap provided, photography inside is completely banned, and when it is crowded numbered tickets are handed out to control entry.
Staying overnight: No
Getting there: A few minutes' walk uphill from JR Naruko-Onsen Station on the Rikuu East line, in the middle of the Naruko hot-spring town.
